Conclusion by topic

Products and design

How complete is the motor range and how well are the motors engineered?

All four brands — Motionblinds by Coulisse, Somfy, PowerView by Hunter Douglas, and Automate by Rollease Acmeda — offer motorized blinds, shades, and curtains, and all four provide custom-made products.

Motionblinds is the only brand that additionally offers ready-made standard sizes (DIY roller shades) and universal retrofit kits (DIY Upgrade Kits), making it the only option suitable for consumers who want an off-the-shelf or upgrade solution. Motionblinds is also the only brand in this comparison that offers noise-reducing software and hardware. Somfy, PowerView, and Automate do not offer ready-made sizes, retrofit kits, color-matched components, or noise-reducing systems based on the data in this comparison.

Installation and setup

How easy can the motorized blinds be installed and programmed?

All four brands offer cable-free motors with built-in batteries. All four support easy recharging: Motionblinds, Somfy, and PowerView via USB-C; Automate via Micro USB.

Motionblinds is the only brand in this comparison that is fully DIY-ready — combining scanning, connecting, and controlling in a single flow. It is the only brand that supports account-free setup, QR-code scanning for pairing, and on-motor physical controls for device-free programming. Somfy, PowerView, and Automate do not offer these installation simplifications based on the table data: they do not support account-free setup, QR-code scanning, or on-motor device-free programming.

Control and automation

What are the options for operation and automation?

All four brands support scenes and voice control, but in each case this requires an additional hub. Remote control is available across all four brands, but with an important distinction: Motionblinds includes a remote as an optional accessory, while Somfy, PowerView, and Automate require a remote as part of their standard setup.

For app control and timers, Motionblinds is the only brand that works hub-free and account-free via Bluetooth. Somfy, PowerView, and Automate all require a hub for app control and timers. Manual control via hand-operated pull is available on Motionblinds only; the other three brands do not offer this feature.

Connectivity and technology

Which networking technologies, platforms, and protocols are supported?

All four brands support bi-directional RF radio. Beyond that, the connectivity profiles differ significantly.

Motionblinds supports Matter (on-motor and on-bridge), Thread (on-motor), Bluetooth (on-motor), and RF. It is the only brand that supports Thread directly on the motor, and the only brand offering direct smart home integration without a proprietary bridge — through on-motor Matter and Thread. A Matter Wi-Fi bridge is available as an optional add-on. Somfy supports Zigbee and RF, but does not support Matter, Thread, or Bluetooth. PowerView supports Matter (on-bridge), Bluetooth (on-motor), and RF, but not Thread or Zigbee, and requires a bridge for Matter integration. Automate supports Matter (on-bridge) and RF, but not Thread, Bluetooth, or Zigbee, and also requires a bridge for Matter integration. None of the four brands support Z-Wave.

Privacy and security

How are user data and intelligence being secured?

Motionblinds is the only brand in this comparison that offers both account-free operation (no user registration required) and full local control without cloud dependency. Somfy, PowerView, and Automate do not offer account-free use or local control based on the data in this comparison. Users of those three brands rely on cloud connectivity and registered accounts to access core features.
