USING THE MOTIONBLINDS APP
When you use the Motionblinds app, we process certain personal data to ensure the app works smoothly and delivers the smart control features you expect. This part of the Privacy Statement explains how we process your personal data and in what ways we protect your privacy when you use our Motionblinds apps.
We therefore explain further in this Privacy Statement:
1) How remote operation of your blinds works;
2) What security measures we have in place; and
3) What additional things you can do yourself to ensure safe operation of remote blinds.
Our technologies
For controlling the Motionblinds, we currently know of 3 different apps and technologies used:
1) Motionblinds Bluetooth
What is Motionblinds Bluetooth?
Motionblinds' Bluetooth motors offer a user-friendly solution for the installation and programming of motorised window coverings, where the process can be completed within a minute via a smartphone. This technology not only facilitates automation and operation, but also enhances privacy protection.
2) Motionblinds Wi-Fi bridge
What is the WiFi Bridge?
Motionblinds' bridge motors are controlled via an app and a bridge, allowing users to remotely control the blinds. The app acts as an intermediary between smart home devices and the internet. To use the bridge, the Motionblinds Bridge app must be downloaded and installed on a smartphone or tablet, after which users can send commands to the bridge to control the blinds.
3) Motionblinds Thread and Matter
What is Thread and Matter?
Thread is a wireless protocol designed specifically for smart home applications, enabling reliable and secure connections between devices. It creates a mesh network where each device acts as a network point, increasing the range and stability of the network. Matter, on the other hand, is a new smart home protocol that improves compatibility between different devices, regardless of manufacturer, and makes it easier for users to integrate and control devices.
The different connectivity methodologies work as follows.
Motionblinds Bluetooth
|
How does it work?
|
Connect via bluetooth: Using the app on your smartphone, you connect directly to the window blinds via Bluetooth. This means your smartphone communicates wirelessly with the blinds. Simply turn on Bluetooth on your device and use the app to find and connect to the window blinds.
Remote operation within bluetooth Range: Once the connection is established, you can operate the window covering remotely, as long as you stay within the range of the Bluetooth connection. This range is usually limited to within your home. For example, you can adjust window coverings in the bedroom from your living room, as long as you are within Bluetooth range.
No account required: No personal account is required to use this Bluetooth app. This means you don't need to enter any personal information such as an e-mail address or password to use the app. You simply download the app, switch on Bluetooth and you can immediately start controlling the blinds.
|
|
Are personal data being processed? |
No personal data stored The app is designed so that no personal data is stored or used. This means that the app does not collect information about who you are, where you live, or any other personal details. Your interaction with the app is limited to operating the blinds. No information is collected that could identify you personally. |
|
Security |
Use of radio frequencies Bluetooth technology uses radio frequencies for communication between devices. This method is considered secure because you cannot easily break into these frequencies. Bluetooth communication takes place over short distances and is encrypted, meaning that the data sent between your device and the window covering is protected from interception or intrusion by third parties.
|
|
What else can you do yourself? |
Keep the setup to yourself If you want to connect the window covering to another device via Bluetooth, start by opening the tassel on the cord of the window covering. Inside the tassel, you will find a setup code. This code is needed for the pairing process.

Motionblinds Wi-Fi Bridge
|
How does it work?
|
Control via WiFi Bridge App: The Motionblinds WiFi Bridge app allows you to control your window coverings remotely, no matter where you are. This means that, via an internet connection, you can control the window coverings with your smartphone. Whether you're in the office, on holiday, or just on the road, you're always in control of your window coverings.
Integration with smart home systems: The app works seamlessly with smarthome systems such as Google. This gives you the convenience of using voice commands to control your blinds. For example, you can say, "Hey Google, close the window blinds", and the WiFi Bridge app will execute this command through your smarthome system.
Downloading the app: To use the WiFi Bridge app, you must first download it on your smartphone. After downloading, it is necessary to create an account. This account ensures secure and personal access to the app, allowing you to control the window coverings from any location.
The app allows you to set automatic programmes, such as having the blinds raised or lowered at set times. This increases convenience and ensures that your window coverings are automatically operated according to your personal schedule. However, this functionality does not allow for the processing of personal data.
|
|
Are personal data being processed? |
Create Account with Personal Information: When you create an account for the WiFi Bridge app, you will be asked to provide your email address. This information is used to identify and manage your account. It ensures that you have personal access to the app and that your settings and preferences are saved.
Storage and processing of account and usage data: The data you enter when creating your account, as well as the data on how you use the app (such as the set programmes), is stored and processed. This processing is necessary for the app to function correctly and to manage your personal settings and preferences.
Setting the Astro timer function also requires one-time access to location data. |
|
Security |
Authentication and authorisation: To access window covering controls, you need to authenticate. This means you have to prove that you are the legitimate user, for example by logging in with a unique username and password. This prevents unauthorised access to the controls.
Security updates: Regular updates to the software are made to ensure that security remains up-to-date and any vulnerabilities are addressed quickly.
|
|
What else can you do yourself? |
Choosing a good password: When creating an account to control your smart home devices, it is essential to choose a strong and unique password. A strong password is a combination of letters (both uppercase and lowercase), numbers and special characters. It should be long enough (ideally 12 characters or more) and not easily guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your name, date of birth or simple sequences such as "123456" or "password".
It is crucial to keep your login details, such as your username and password, secret. Do not share this information with others and be careful where you store it. Sharing your login details can lead to unauthorised access to your smart home devices, which can pose risks to your privacy and security. |

Motionblinds Thread and Matter
|
How does it work?
|
No personal account: Controlling the blinds remotely with Thread and Matter does not require an additional personal account within your existing smart home environment. This means you do not need to enter any personal information such as an email address or password to control the blinds. You can control the blinds directly through a compatible smart home system or app, without the need for a separate account.
Decentralised storage: Thread and Matter work in a decentralised way. This means depending on the platform you use, your data is not stored on a remote server or in the cloud. This may depend on the conditions of your smart home platform.
This offers several advantages in terms of privacy and reliability. |
|
Are personal data being processed? |
No storage or use of personal data: No personal data is stored or used when using Thread and Matter to control window coverings. This means that the technologies only function to facilitate communication between devices in the smart home network, without collecting or storing any information about the user.
|
|
Security |
Certified security protocol: Thread and Matter use security protocols. These protocols are designed to protect the data being transmitted from interception and unauthorised access.
Matter: Matter ensures secure operation through a combination of authentication codes and encryption. For encryption, Matter uses the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128 Cipher Block Chaining Message Authentication Code (CCM) with 128-bit AES Cipher Block Chaining (CBC). This provides strong security against unauthorised access and manipulation of data.
In addition, Matter applies the principle of 'defence-in-depth' to provide appropriate levels of security and privacy for individual devices. This layered approach optimises resource utilisation and ensures the availability, integrity and confidentiality of communications between smart devices in smart home systems.
Thread: Thread uses AES-128-bit encryption, a standard used to protect against interception and unauthorised access. Encryption ensures the security of data transmitted within the network.
When adding new devices to a Thread network, a secure pairing and authentication process known as 'commissioning' is required. This process ensures that only authorised devices can access the network, providing an extra layer of security against unwanted access.
Continuous updates and improvements by the Thread Group, a consortium of companies dedicated to developing the protocol, ensure that Thread is regularly updated to address new security threats.
Secure connection via QR code: To connect a device to the window covering, it is necessary to scan a QR code located on the window covering. This provides a layer of security as physical access to the window covering is required to make the link. Scanning the QR code ensures that only those with access to the window coverings can operate them.
|
|
What else can you do yourself? |
Keep the QR code to yourself Keep the QR code of the blinds to yourself and do not share it with others.
